A simple, affordable uniform for North Mead

Our school uniform helps children feel part of North Mead and creates a strong sense of belonging.

We expect pupils to wear the agreed school uniform and to take pride in their appearance when representing the school.

At the same time, we want uniform to remain simple, practical and affordable for families.

Children do not need to wear branded items other than where families choose to purchase them. Most uniform can be bought from any suitable high-street or supermarket retailer.

Our school uniform

The North Mead uniform is:

  • royal blue jumper, cardigan or school sweatshirt
  • white polo shirt, shirt or blouse
  • black or grey trousers, shorts or skirt
  • royal blue checked dress

Clothing should not display other logos.

Please clearly label all items with your child’s name.

School-logo items

A sweatshirt with the North Mead logo is available to purchase, but a logo sweatshirt is not compulsory.

Families can also purchase a North Mead book bag.

These items are available through school. The My Child at School app can be used to order school uniform items, and the office team can support families who need help placing an order.

PE kit

For PE, children need:

  • white T-shirt
  • black shorts or tracksuit bottoms
  • black plimsolls
  • trainers for outdoor PE

PE kit does not need to carry the school logo.

Swimming kit

Children who are swimming need:

  • swimming trunks or a one-piece swimming costume
  • a towel

Families will receive information about swimming arrangements when their child is taking part.

Footwear and practical clothing

Children should come to school dressed appropriately for a busy primary-school day.

Uniform and footwear should allow children to:

  • learn comfortably
  • play outside
  • move safely around school
  • take part in normal school activities

Please ensure that clothing and footwear are suitable for the weather and clearly named.

Jewellery

For health and safety reasons, pupils should not normally wear jewellery in school.

Stud earrings may be worn, but these must be removed for PE and swimming.

North Mead cannot accept responsibility for jewellery or other personal belongings brought into school.

Keeping uniform affordable

Families are free to purchase standard uniform items from any retailer, provided that they meet the school’s uniform requirements.

This means families do not have to purchase expensive branded uniform.

North Mead also provides access to second-hand uniform. Families can contact Mrs Hurst, our Family Support Worker, for information about what is currently available.

If the cost of uniform is causing difficulty, please speak to us. We want to work with families to find a practical solution.

Inclusion and reasonable adjustments

We recognise that some children may need adjustments to the uniform expectations because of:

  • disability
  • SEND
  • sensory needs
  • medical needs
  • religion or belief
  • another protected characteristic

Families should contact the school if an adjustment may be needed.

We will consider individual circumstances carefully while maintaining the overall purpose of the school uniform. The current Uniform Policy also provides for families to raise requests relating to protected characteristics or the cost of uniform.

Taking pride in North Mead

Uniform is one small part of the culture of our school.

We want children to understand that wearing it means they are representing their class, their school and the North Mead community.

Our expectations are therefore simple: Wear it correctly. Look after it. Take pride in belonging.
