What it means to be part of North Mead

The North Mead Way brings together the expectations, routines, attitudes and values that shape daily life in our school.

It is how we turn our vision into something children experience every day.

At its heart are three simple ideas:

  • Every child belongs.
  • Every child can achieve.
  • Every day matters.

Our strapline captures this commitment: Every Child. Every Lesson. Every Day.

High expectations for everyone

We are ambitious for every child.

We expect pupils to:

  • attend regularly and arrive on time
  • be ready to learn
  • work hard
  • take pride in their learning
  • show respect
  • follow routines
  • contribute positively
  • persevere when learning is difficult
  • take increasing responsibility
  • make safe and thoughtful choices

High expectations apply to all pupils, including those who may need additional support or reasonable adjustments to meet them successfully.

Team Tactics

Our Team Tactics describe the learning behaviours and personal qualities we want children to develop.

  • Be Ready

We are prepared to learn.

  • Be Respectful

We treat others with kindness and consideration.

  • Be Responsible

We take ownership of our actions, choices and learning.

  • Be Reflective

We think about what we have learned and what we can improve.

  • Be Resilient

We keep going when something is difficult.

  • Show Reciprocity

We learn with and from other people.

These are not simply classroom rules.

They help children develop the habits they need to become successful learners, positive members of the community and increasingly independent young people.

Ready to learn

Successful learning starts with a strong learning climate.

Across North Mead, children should experience:

  • calm and purposeful classrooms
  • clear routines
  • high expectations
  • positive relationships
  • consistent adult language
  • appropriate challenge
  • support when it is needed
  • classrooms in which mistakes are part of learning

Teachers make expectations clear and help children understand what successful learning looks like.

Our Learning Loop

Teaching across North Mead is shaped by our Learning Loop: Retrieve → Teach & Model → Practise → Apply → Reflect

Children are supported to:

  • remember previous learning
  • understand new ideas
  • see high-quality modelling
  • practise with appropriate support
  • apply learning increasingly independently
  • reflect on what they now know and can do

This gives children a familiar structure for learning across subjects.

Belonging

Children learn best when they feel that they belong.

We want every pupil to:

  • feel known
  • feel safe
  • participate
  • develop positive relationships
  • see themselves represented
  • access opportunities
  • feel that they are an important part of North Mead

Our approach to inclusion is therefore not about fitting children into a single model.

We ask: What does this child need in order to succeed?

Behaviour and relationships

We expect children to behave well because strong behaviour protects learning, relationships and safety.

Adults teach and reinforce expectations through:

  • clear routines
  • modelling
  • reminders
  • consistent responses
  • recognition of positive behaviour
  • restorative conversations
  • appropriate consequences
  • support for regulation where needed

We combine high expectations with strong relationships.

Children are encouraged not simply to follow expectations, but increasingly to understand why they matter.

DR TIMP

Our DR TIMP framework helps children understand the values and principles that support life in school and in wider society:

  • D — Democracy
  • R — Rule of Law
  • T — Tolerance
  • I — Individual Liberty
  • M — Mutual Respect
  • P — Protected Characteristics

These ideas are explored through assemblies, PSHCE, RE, curriculum subjects, pupil leadership and everyday school life.

They help children learn to:

  • listen to others
  • respect difference
  • understand rights and responsibilities
  • recognise unfairness
  • challenge discrimination
  • take part positively in their community

Attendance matters

Being in school matters.

Every day of absence is learning that cannot be fully replaced.

We therefore place a strong emphasis on:

  • regular attendance
  • punctuality
  • early identification of concerns
  • working with families
  • removing barriers where possible
  • maintaining high expectations

Strong attendance gives children the best possible chance to benefit from the education and opportunities available to them.

Opportunity for every child

The North Mead Way extends beyond lessons.

We believe children should have access to experiences that broaden horizons and develop confidence.

Our offer includes:

  • trips and visits
  • enrichment
  • clubs
  • sport
  • music
  • performance
  • pupil leadership
  • Fantastic Fifty experiences
  • opportunities to represent the school
  • experiences linked to culture, community and wider life

We are committed to ensuring that opportunity does not depend on a family’s ability to pay.

Independence

A key aim of the North Mead Way is to help children become increasingly independent.

We want pupils to learn to:

  • organise themselves
  • solve problems
  • make decisions
  • manage routines
  • ask for help appropriately
  • reflect on their choices
  • take responsibility
  • persevere
  • contribute to others

Support should help children move towards greater confidence and independence over time.

Working with families

Families are an important part of the North Mead Way.

We aim to work with parents and carers through:

  • clear communication
  • early conversations
  • shared expectations
  • celebration of success
  • support when difficulties arise
  • honest discussion
  • partnership around attendance, behaviour, learning and wellbeing

Children are most successful when school and home understand the shared goal and work together towards it.

What should a North Mead pupil experience?

A child at North Mead should be able to say:

  • I am known.
  • I belong.
  • I am expected to do well.
  • I know how to learn.
  • I know how to behave.
  • I get help when I need it.
  • I have opportunities beyond the classroom.
  • My voice matters.
  • I am becoming more independent.
  • I can make a positive difference.

Our commitment

The North Mead Way is not a poster or a slogan.

It is the consistent experience we want children to have across classrooms, corridors, assemblies, clubs, trips and wider school life.

It brings together our expectations for: learning, behaviour, belonging, opportunity, responsibility and independence.

Every Child. Every Lesson. Every Day.

Together We Make a Positive Difference.
